I recently spent some time with a hard working 20 year old who needed some life advice. He asked me the following question:

How did you figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life?

"Happiness needs to be your north star"

I told him whatever he decides to do, that it doesn't have to be for the rest of his life. But that in all choices made, happiness needs to be the guiding force behind his decision making.

He brought up the idea of being an entrepreneur (having never given it any thought until we had spoken), and I told him why not find a job to hold you over while running a side hustle to figure out if being your own boss is something you enjoy. Money is important but I let him know if that's the only thing holding him back, that maybe he's not ready to be his own boss.

However I'm also big on betting on yourself, so I ended our conversation with: You're only 20 YEARS OLD! If there was ever a time to take a chance, it would be now. I told him while running a business is much harder than working a 9-5 if that's what he wanted to try it he should do it NOW. What if you decided to start your self employment career today and in 5 years you end up failing. You'd still only be 25!!! Can you imagine all the life and business lessons you'd learn

Because I didn't want to use a typical Scarface image of "the world is yours"

In the end it's all about is what you're doing making you happy? If not, life's too damn short to do something you don't love doing. Bet on you and every decision you make will be the right one.
